I’ve seen this around a few times about journalism. It’s got a bit of truth to it. Journalists are supposed to report on their own observations- the “look out the window part” to verify it’s true.
But it’s also our job to show other sides to the story sometimes, and lead the reader to decide. So of course we show that through a quote, or research. It’s a real darned if you do, darned if you don’t situation. If I did a story about the Conservatives for example, and don’t include one quote/ piece of information from the Liberal side of things, I’d be accused of biased reporting.
From personal experience there’s always another side. The truth is usually somewhere I’d like to call the murky middle. Both stories end up with some kernel of truth. Sometimes it’s also about what the reader understands in the story as well. If their world view is skewed a certain way from mine, they’re going to see something different in it. Journalists can’t help that. Everyone evaluates information differently.
