I’ve had a chance to re-watch the first four seasons of the show Lucifer with my dad on Netflix finishing just in time for season 5, which dropped August 21. Lucifer is a show following the devil on his adventures in Los Angeles helping the LAPD solve crimes. It’s based on comics, and stars Tom Ellis, along with fantastic ensemble.
Season 4 ended with the devil returning to Hell after demons escape and threaten those he love including his girlfriend (?) Chloe Decker (Lauren German). The first four episodes of season 5 cover his return to battle against his twin brother, a hunch-shouldered Michael, and a second angelic brother Amenadiel (DB Woodside) experiencing fatherhood with the psychiatrist to the Celestials Linda (Rachael Harris). They include a very peppy Dan (Kevin Alejandro), and an Ella (Aimee Garcia) who’s trying to get her love life in order. Maze (Lesley-Ann Brandt) trying work through abandonment issues after the departure of a potential partner in Eve.
It’s a rare 16 episode fifth season on Netflix, which was initially supposed to stand as the series’ final season. However, as they were heading into production on the last of the episodes, the streaming service ordered more. A sixth season, due out next year, will likely be its last, as the show’s executive producer, and star Tom Ellis has said he looks forward to moving on to other roles.
They have certainly thrown it all at the wall so-to-speak. The twin brother is played by Tom Ellis, with a creepy American accent, and a hunched shoulder. Ellis really does some work that should make him an award winner. German picks up as the humour slack after Michael shows up to work in Lucifer’s place, and does everything he’s supposed to.
Episode 4 is a film noir 1930’s as Trixie (Scarlett Estevez) asks Lucifer to tell her a bedtime story about his ring. The episode is funny, and gives Lesley-Ann Brandt a chance to shine in her own dual role as she shows off her singing voice.
This show is a lot of fun to watch. I give it 9/10 so far on the fifth season.
Random thoughts:
- Trixie can steal any scene she’s in.
- What’s with Dan’s endless positivity?
- Based on the work he does as Michael, we should be saying Emmy Winner Tom Ellis.
