Five Takeaways on the Meghan and Harry Interview with Oprah

I watched the whole two hours of the Meghan and Harry interview with Oprah Winfrey. Call it a guilty pleasure. Call it professional curiosity. I like them both. Here’s what I took from it:

  1. Oprah as a great interviewer?! Can we stop talking about Oprah Winfrey as a great Journalist/ Interviewer? She admitted this morning she had contact with Meghan and Harry before the interview as part of her prep to ask what they wanted to get out of it. The real interviewers prep independent of their subjects, and give an outline of the topics right before it begins. Also, I couldn’t stand the way she at times put words into Meghan’s mouth. There was something about the editing that prevented it from being a great interview.

2. Natural Meghan: Meghan was as natural as always at interviews. She talked about her own personal experience with her in-laws, and I think tried to keep things civil, can there be anything more human than that? The admission to having suicidal thoughts, and her attempts to seek help topped the revelations for me, because seeing someone as self-assured as her speak about it in such an open way will probably save lives.

3. You guys had a conversation about the colour of Archie’s skin? With Who? This was the only area where they went halfway by refusing to name who they had the disgusting conversation with. At first my money was on Phillip, as the obvious being 99 years old, and known to have some backward attitudes about race. But this morning Oprah made it clear on CBS This Morning that Harry told her off camera that it was neither his grandmother, nor grandfather. And it would ruin them if he said anything. My money has changed to either Charles, or William. Harry has strained relationships with both. Regardless, there’s probably an army of journalists trying to figure this one out. I don’t think Harry and Meghan will ever identify them because they both want to keep some relationship with the royals.

4. The US was the only play left… Canada would’ve kept them if it weren’t for security costs. There were discussions at the time about splitting the costs somehow between Canada, and the UK so they could stay. There was speculation that Charles might have chipped into help. But clearly whatever happened between him and Harry finished that. So the US was it.

5. The Romance Is Still Alive… The love is still there, even after all they’ve been through. That Harry was willing to leave the only life he’d ever known to protect his wife, and family is a modern fairytale. Every gesture they shared on camera it was clear the love was deeper than ever.
